We are able to offer 24 hour nursing for critical cases with a veterinary surgeon in attendance 24 hours a day every day of the year.



Meet our surgery staff:

Tom Clarke



Tom is a partner at Abbey House. He graduated from Cambridge in 1983 and has been in small animal practice ever since. He specialises in radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. He is also able to perform laparoscopic surgery which is less invasive than open surgery and results in reduced post-op pain and more rapid recoveries.

Lisa Davies

BVM&S., CertVOphthal., MRCVS


Lisa is a partner at Abbey House. She qualified in 1989 from the Royal Dick, Edinburgh and has worked in Leeds since that time. She gained a certificate in veterinary ophthalmology in 1996 and as well as consulting and operating from our Rothwell and Kippax branches she also sees ophthalmology referrals from other practices.

Neil E Palmer

BVSc, MSc (Clin Onc) MRCVS


Neil graduated from Liverpool University in 1987 and following a period in mixed practice has spent the last 15 years in small animal practice in Bradford. He joined the Veterinary Team at Abbey House in November 2009. He has a particular interest in oncology cases and has a Masters degree in clinical oncology.

Justyna Ratczak



Justyna graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Warsaw Agricultural University, Poland, in 2001. She started working at Abbey House in October 2009 after spending 3 years working in another small animal practice in Leeds. Justyna is interested in internal medicine and looks after the inpatients in the hospital ward, her specialism however is in animal welfare and behaviour. She has a post graduate diploma in companion animal behaviour counselling from The University of Southampton.


Laura Smith

B Vet Med, PG Cert SAM, MRCVS


Laura saw practice at Abbey House during her time at London University. She graduated in 2009 and joined our Veterinary Team in January 2010. Laura has the BSAVA Post Graduate Certificate in Small Animal Medicine.

James Bost



James joined the practice in January 2015 following qualification from The University of Cambridge and spending time working for a charity in India neutering stray dogs.  

Roberta Bocedi

GP Cert (FelP), MVB, MRCVS


Roberta qualified from the University of Parma, Italy in 2004. Between 2007 & 2010 she worked in York before returning to Italy to become the joint owner of a small animal practice. Roberta joined the team at Abbey House in August 2015, she has an interest in feline medicine and has recently completed the General Practitioner Certificate in Feline Practice.  

Evi Kalogirou



Evi joined the practice in January 2016, she graduated from the Univeristy of Thessaly in Greece. Following qualification she spent time working at the Hellenic Animal Society in Athens taking care of thousands of stray dogs and cats and since moving to the UK has been working at a veterinary hospital in North Yorkshire.

Jane is originally from Zimbabwe, she moved to the UK in 1978 and qualified in 1981.

After spending 12 years in small animal practice she left to teach veterinary nursing and animal care for 3 years.

After working in a small animal dental referral centre for 3 years, she joined Abbey House in 1996.

Gillian Kerrod RVN

Deputy Head Nurse

Gillian started her career at the age of 15 helping at her local veterinary practice after school and during holidays. She began her veterinary nurse training 3 years later working in a mixed animal practice.  She joined a small animal practice in Wakefield in 1991 and qualified in 1992.

Gillian joined Abbey House in 1993 as the practice nurse, since then her role has changed and she is now the deputy head nurse. She has a special interest in animal behaviour.


Charlotte Dobson RVN D32/33

Clinical Coach


Charlotte joined the practice straight from school as a trainee veterinary nurse and went on to qualify in 1996. Charlotte spent the next five years as the senior surgical nurse at the Morley hospital. Since completing her D32/33 assessor training in 2000 Charlotte's role has developed in to that of clinical coach, supporting and training veterinary nurses to complete their Nursing Progress Log.

Emma Huffinley RVN

Veterinary Nurse


Emma started at Abbey House in 1999 and qualified in 2004. Emma works in the hospital at a weekend and particularly enjoys the unpredictable nature of the emergency work at the weekends she also has an interest in animal nutrition.

Candice Dyson RVN

Practice Nurse/Medical Nurse


Candice joined Abbey House in 2010 after working in two other practices in the West Yorkshire area. After a three year nursing course with the College of Animal Welfare she qualified as an RVN in July 2013. Candice particularly enjoys teaching, colleagues and clients and has recently completed the clinical coach training course. Candice has many animals at home including dogs, cats, horses and chickens. Candice is currently studing for the advanced diploma in veterinary nursing. 

Kirsty Clark RVN

Oncology/Surgical Nurse 


Kirsty completed a FdSc degree in Veterinary Nursing from Harper Adams University College in Shropshire in 2010. Kirsty worked as a senior veterinary nurse at a multi site practice in Halifax for four years before joining the team at Morley in July 2014. Kirsty has a 5year old Staffie x called Tye. Kirsty is currently studying for the advanced diploma in veterinary nursing.


Fiona Hazell RVN Cert VN ECC

Night Nurse


Fiona qualified as a veterinary nurse from Berkshire College of Agriculture in 1996, whilst working at a practice in West Yorkshire. Following qualification she worked at the PDSA, in Welwyn Garden City and then joined Abbey House as a practice nurse at the Rothwell clinic in 2002. Fiona also worked at the Morley hospital as senior surgical nurse before moving to the night team in 2008. Fiona really enjoys the emergency and critical care work and gained the Vets Now Cert VN ECC in 2012. Fiona has two dogs a cat and some fish.

Hayley qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2009 whilst working at a practice in Nottingham. Hayley moved to Yorkshire and initially worked in Barnsley before joining the Abbey House night team in June 2015. At home Hayley has two dogs a spaniel and a basset x spaniel.

Sammy completed a National Diploma in Animal Care and a HND in Equine Studies before she got her first position in veterinary practice. After 14 months there, she was offered a trainee veterinary nurse position at Abbey House in September 2007. Sammy then went on to become a registered veterinary nurse in 2010.

Elaine started working at Abbey House as a trainee veterinary nurse in 2009 after working at the PDSA and she qualified as a registered veterinary nurse in 2012. Elaine is a branch rota nurse which means she works at the Kippax, Rothwell and Morley clinics,  she particularly enjoys looking after the small furries and running nurse consultations. Elaine holds an advanced diploma in veterinary nursing.

Stephanie Preston RVN

Steph started at Abbey House in 2009 and went to college with Candice and completed her exams in July 2013. She has a Cocker Spaniel called Lily and a Guinea Pig called Mr Cavy. Steph has now joined the branch rota, working at the Kippax and Rothwell clinics as well as the Morley hospital.

Veterinary Nurse 


Laura qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2011 after completing a foundation degree at Myerscough college in Preston. She has worked at a small animal practice in Halifax before joining Abbey House in November 2014. 

Fiona Newboult RVN

Veterinary Nurse


Fiona qualified as a veterinary nurse after completing a foundation degree at the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2012. Her first role was based at a practice in Doncaster, then after spell as a locum at Abbey House she joined the team on a permanent basis in 2015. Fiona particularly enjoys in-patient care and anaesthesia. Fiona has a horse and three-legged rescue cat. 

Georgia Wrigley RVN

Veterinary Nurse


Georgia joined the Abbey House team in April 2016, she qualified as an RVN in January 2016 from the College of Animal Welfare. Georgia has worked in small animal practice since she was 16 when she started as a "Saturday helper". She particularly enjoys surgical nursing and would like to do an advanced diploma one day. She has her own animals to look after to, Yoda the cat, Biscuit the Springer Spaniel and Johnny the horse.
